I must admit I love styling consoles. This console is not in my foyer but you see it right when you turn into our house. I have styled it a million ways and feel like through that process I have found 6 fundamental steps to creating a cohesive and successful console styling. The design tips are as follows; create a focal point, add symmetry, pick a color scheme, use neutral books, add decor, and most importantly, be selective.

Let’s go a little more in depth with each of these tips.

1. Create a focal point: use a large piece of art that draws your eye towards the console and sits nicely centered over it. I like this large neutral piece of art that fits well on the wall space above the console. I also love a big mirror over a console. This makes your space grow and is perfect for outfit checks 🙂
2. Add symmetry: by adding symmetry, you are adding balance to the console and this makes our brains happy. By nature, we love symmetry. I do this by adding two matching lamps. You can add symmetry by adding matching objects at the ends of your console. eg. lamps, vases, or wall sconces.
3. Pick a color scheme: this is important to keep your decor looking cohesive and designed. I chose a neutral color scheme (are you even shocked?) and made sure that all the decor I added to my console matches that color scheme. This step will automatically elevate your decor.
4. Use neutral coffee table books: Coffee table are such an essential piece for decor in general. They add dimension and add height when stacked together. I love stacking them and adding decorative objects on top. They tend to add personality to your space and are a beautiful source of inspiration.
5. Add decor: Pick pieces that fit within your color scheme. I love to incorporate candles, decorative bowls, decorative accent pieces and smaller art pieces. This also gives you a chance to introduce more materials, for example marble links, textured candles, or wooden bowls. Use hierarchy to display pieces without cluttering.
6. Be selective: Pick your favorite things and that’s it. It’s very easy to start stacking things on a console and make it looks cluttered or undefined. Pick a few books, some lamps, some decorative pieces and create a beautiful composition using only your favorite items. It’s ok to put away decor for a different season or rearrange every few weeks (I love to do this!). And I promise it will keep your console looking perfectly styled.
